Welcome to CODE
Competition in the Digital Era: Geopolitics and Technology in the 21st Century explores all things geopolitics and technology.
Competition in the Digital Era (CODE): Geopolitics and Technology in the 21st Century is a European Research Council-funded project investigating the technological competition between China, the United States, and Europe in three key sectors of contemporary economics and geopolitics: semiconductors, cloud computing, and space.
At its heart, CODE has three overarching goals: to expand the theoretical toolbox of International Relations theories by integrating insights from political economy, innovation, and management studies, to provide a methodologically sound analysis of ongoing geopolitical and technological transformations, and to disseminate the results of our research to inform policy and societal debates on these particularly sensitive issues. Hence this blog!
The project and this relevant Substack will zoom in on:
The technological competition between China, the US, and Europe and its geopolitical implications;
Geoeconomics, European strategic autonomy, and technological sovereignty;
China’s industrial and innovation policy and the return of industrial policy in the US and Europe;
The role of digital technologies, big data, and artificial intelligence in international politics;
The role of public and private actors in space policy in China, the US and Europe;
State-business relations and economic statecraft;
The role of commercial technologies and the private sector in the field of security and defense.
This Substack and its authors, Antonio, Mahmoud, Riccardo, and Thao—respectively, research professor and PhD researchers at the Center for Security, Diplomacy, and Strategy at the Brussels School of Governance—will guide you through the intricate world of technology, economics, and geopolitics.
